Long ago, a vast white sphere, the Traveler, drifted into our solar system and gifted humanity a Golden Age of impossible science, before its ancient enemy, the Darkness, caught it. In the cataclysm called the Collapse, the dying Traveler released the Light and the Ghosts, sparks that raise the dead as Guardians, immortal soldiers who defend the Last City beneath the Traveler's silent husk.

You are one of them. Your commanders are the Vanguard: the Titan , the Warlock , and the Hunter . What follows is the story of the last decade, told for someone who's dipped in and out, with the focus on the moments that actually changed the universe: who died, who switched sides, and which worlds were lost or won.

The whole saga in 90 seconds

The Cabal's caged the Traveler and lost; that woke it and summoned its ancient enemy, . Over ten years you lost , learned the truth that Light and Dark aren't good and evil, mastered the Darkness yourself, and (alongside humanity, the Eliksni and the Cabal) finally killed the Witness inside the Traveler. But its death cracked the cosmic order. Now the are dying and divided, a buried prophecy says they must be bound to survive, and the Vanguard has fractured over hiding the truth. Monument of Triumph is the game's send-off and its two hidden cutscenes are the real last word. The detail's all below; hover any name for who they are.

Before Destiny 2 · the first years

If you only ever played Destiny 2, the first game laid down three years of groundwork. After the Collapse, the survivors built the Last City under the silent Traveler, and the sent Guardians out to hold back the species picking over the ruins: the scavenging Fallen, the militaristic Cabal, the machine , and the . One early find mattered more than the rest. Buried beneath Mars sat , a Golden-Age war machine that had ridden out the Collapse on its own terms and spent years deciding whether humanity was worth protecting.

Out past the City, in the asteroid belt, lived the , a people apart who answered to Queen and her brother, Prince . Their hidden kingdom, the Reef, is where Guardians first met them. When the Fallen House of Wolves rose up under a captain called , who wanted to unite every Fallen House under one banner, Mara opened the Reef to Guardians and they put him down.

The larger threat was the Hive. Guardians killed the Hive prince Crota, then faced his father, , the Taken King, named for his power to twist enemies into a warped, enslaved force called the Taken. He brought his moon-sized Dreadnaught into the system to avenge his son. Mara led the Awoken fleet against Oryx and was presumed dead when the Dreadnaught's weapon wiped out her armada. No body was ever found. That apparent death, and Uldren's slow unravelling without her, is what sets up Forsaken. Keep Rasputin, the Awoken, Skolas and Oryx in the back of your mind, because all four come back around in Destiny 2.

Side chapters · Mercury & Mars

You kill Uldren, but the City falls into an endless three-week time loop you can never quite break. This is also where you meet and his high-stakes game, Gambit and where Uldren's discarded Ghost finds his corpse, ready to raise him anew.

The death that changed the tone

Forsaken is the hinge of the whole series: the loss of Cayde turns a hopeful space-fantasy into a story about grief, revenge and, eventually, forgiveness.

The ancient enemy that hunted the Traveler hasn't just sent armies. One of its own vessels now sits in our system, and it has been waiting here a very long time.

Between chapters · the Shadowkeep-year seasons
Undying

Beyond Light · 2020 Stasis · first Dark power

On Jupiter's frozen moon Europa, the exiled Fallen warlord bends the Darkness into a weapon: Stasis, the power of cosmic ice. To stop her you learn to wield it too (the first time Guardians turn the Darkness to their own ends) guided by the time-lost .

The lesson of Europa is uncomfortable: the Darkness isn't simply evil. It's a tool and now it's yours.

Universe change · four worlds vanish

You sever her bargain by killing her body, but her Ghost vanishes, and a warning lingers about the far greater power behind every Pyramid, now almost here.

Why it matters

If the Traveler can choose an enemy as monstrous as Savathûn, then Light and Darkness were never simply "good" and "evil." That single revelation is the philosophical hinge the whole saga turns on.

Between chapters · the Witch Queen-year seasons
Risen

The alliance holds. and the Vanguard formally join forces against the Lucent Hive, humanity, Cabal and Eliksni now fighting on the same side.

Wish

The final season; the door opens. With Riven, Crow and Mara Sov, the "15th Wish" is made, opening the path that will lead Guardians into the Traveler itself for the Final Shape.

The Final Shape · 2024 Prismatic · Light + Dark

Into the Pale Heart

The chase leads inside the Traveler, into the Pale Heart, a dreamscape woven from memory, where a resurrected walks again at your side. Fusing Light and Dark into the Prismatic power, you rally a full coalition (humanity, the Eliksni, and Cabal) against the Witness's design.

In the raid Salvation's Edge and the climactic mission Excision, the assembled Guardians unravel the 's collective mind for good. After ten years, the Light and Darkness Saga ends but killing a being that old leaves a hole in the order of the cosmos.

Who the Witness was

The Witness's origin was actually revealed a year earlier, in Season of the Deep, through a vision shown by the leviathan Ahsa. Long ago the Traveler uplifted a mortal species and then moved on, leaving them behind. Desperate for a single fixed meaning, they found the Veil, used the Darkness to merge into one mind, and set out to freeze all of creation into one perfect "final shape." The villain of the whole saga was, at root, a people who could not bear an unfinished universe.

The cost & the crack

nearly loses his faith; Cayde returns only within the Pale Heart; the coalition of former enemies holds. The Witness is gone and its death is the first domino of the next saga.

Alongside , his daughter , and a wavering , you put Fikrul down. With him gone, the Echo of Riis chooses Eramis as its bearer, and she leaves the Sol system to rebuild the Eliksni homeworld, lifting the dark curse that had long plagued Mithrax on her way out.

Using what she leaves behind and the Tablet of Ruin, you take up the mantle of a Taken King yourself. and go to war over the Echo, and in the end you destroy it. Xivu survives, still scheming.

Quietly, the lore turns to , whose council is fracturing in the Witness's absence. The next saga is already gathering.

Saga Two · Year 8 · "The Year of Prophecy"

The Fate Saga

A new power vacuum, a new power source, dark matter and a prophecy of extinction no one is allowed to hear.

The Edge of Fate · July 2025 Dark matter

There, one of the Nine, Three (III), dies, and through the time-displaced delivers a prophecy: bind the Nine to the physical plane, or Sol faces extinction.

You learn the Nine have manipulated events for ages, even engineering 's original death and rebirth as a Guardian. And, fearing mass panic, and the Vanguard bury the prophecy.

The big twist

You (the Guardian) are hinted to be a weapon of the Nine, shaped for a purpose not yet revealed. The Vanguard's cover-up sets up the central conflict of everything that follows.

Renegades · Dec 2025 10th & final expansion

Furious at the cover-up, breaks with the Vanguard and sets up an outlaw base in Mars' Tharsis Cantina, gathering a crew: , the Eliksni , and a by-the-book Praxic Order Guardian, Aunor. Their enemy is the Barant Imperium, a Cabal legion under Premier Lume and . Bael is not a Guardian. He is a human who took the outcast "Dredgen" name and carries no Ghost, his power lent instead by VI of the Nine.

Bael's superweapon, Nightfall Station, runs on Eclipse energy, an anti-paracausal technology that strips away the force behind Guardians and Ghosts and would kill them for good. You stop it and claim the Praxic Blade; the crew concludes the Nine must be bound into mortal vessels. turns her sights on seizing the Nine her own way, and the Drifter, who spent a lifetime ready to bolt, finally chooses to stay and fight beside the family he's found.

About those lightsabers

Renegades is an official, Lucasfilm-collaborated Star Wars-styled chapter, the Praxic Order as Jedi, the Praxic Blade as lightsaber. It's Destiny telling a Star Wars story with its own lore, not a crossover.

Raids Worth Knowing

The biggest lore drops live inside the six-player raids. These are the ones that move the story the most.

Vault of Glass D1 · returned

Deep under Venus you bring down Atheon and the time-bending Vex of the Vault. The oldest raid in the game, and the clearest look at how the Vex treat time itself as a weapon.

King's Fall D1 · returned

Aboard the Dreadnaught you kill , the Taken King. It closes out the Hive's god-king and explains the Taken you run into across the system.

Last Wish Forsaken

Inside the Dreaming City you confront Riven, the last Ahamkara, and trigger the three-week curse, the wish that quietly bends everything that follows.

Garden of Salvation Shadowkeep

In the Black Garden you face the Sol Divisive Vex as they commune with the newly arrived , the first real link drawn between the Vex and the Darkness.

Root of Nightmares Lightfall

A fight against Nezarec, the Final God of Pain, an ancient Disciple of the Witness dragged back into the present.

Salvation's Edge The Final Shape

The assault inside the Pale Heart that ends the , the climax of the whole ten-year saga.

Right Now

Where Things Stand

The short version, if you're booting up today.

The Witness is dead and the ten-year war is won but its absence cracked the cosmic order. The Nine are unravelling, one of them is dead, and a buried prophecy says they must be bound to mortal flesh or the whole system dies.

The Vanguard is divided by its own cover-up. has set out to end the Hive pantheon for good, hunting her surviving "sisters," and , who are both still scheming and rebuilding. You, meanwhile, may be a weapon the Nine built long ago. And (who spent a lifetime keeping one foot out the door) finally stopped running, choosing to stay and fight beside the family he found.

The system itself has changed: Titan is back, the Eliksni live among us, the Cabal are half-friend and half-foe, and humanity's circle of allies is wider than ever. And after years adrift, the Traveler has returned to hover over the Last City, steadying an Earth that had begun to die when Three of the Nine fell.

The Final Update · June 9, 2026

Monument of Triumph

Less a new chapter than a memorial, a living museum in the Tower honouring everything Guardians have done: gods felled, blades shattered, Nightmares banished, a Witch Queen out-played at her own game.

Active development winds down here, and the live-service machinery stops. But the servers stay on, the Sol system stays open, and the whole ten-year legend remains yours to walk through, raid by raid, whenever you return.

The true last word · two hidden cutscenes

Bungie buried the real finale behind a checklist of Triumphs, so it's easy to miss. There are two secret ending cinematics, one a heartfelt goodbye, one a tease of what would have come next. They're worth unlocking yourself, but if you'd rather just know, tap to reveal.

Reveal Ending 1, the farewell spoiler

reflects on his long road, then steps down, handing the title of Vanguard Commander to . A quiet, earned send-off for the people who held the City together.

Reveal Ending 2, the cliffhanger spoiler

An "Unknown Voice", widely believed to be the Winnower, the primal Darkness itself, speaks through Lodi. It tells you to rest and enjoy beating the Witness, but to "stay hungry," hints the Nine only need Guardians because it exists, and promises an inevitable, far greater conflict, closing with: roughly, don't worry, when it's over, I won't leave you behind. With no Destiny 3 in development, it's a thread that may never be pulled.
